Down for a week

So, the Blackboard site went down with a bang this week. All of my classes were cancelled and virtually no emails could get back and forth from faculty to students. While it was a nice week to get homework done (the stuff that didn't require a blackboard page) and get caught up on classes, it makes me wonder just how much stalk we put into a single server. Whatever would we do if the power went out for more than a week? Whatever would we do if the internet was hacked and all sites sent bugs to our computers? This was just a small outage that required a small percentage of very perseverant IT souls to work around the clock. They managed to fix the problem in less than a week. But, a whole school week was totally cut off for several classes. No homework was turned in and no classes could be held via online Elive sessions.

I propose that we have a back up system that we can go to. It doesn't have to be perfect, just an older system kept in the online vaults for outages such as these. What do you think? Could it be possible?

  1. I too was thankful for the persistent IT workers as they completed the backup storage not once, but TWICE due to corruptions. For myself, most of my classes do not rely on the blackboard system, so I still managed to get most of my work done, however, I was also wondering what they would do if there was an even major glitch in the system. I agree Clarissa, that we should have a backup system that could keep at least the communications systems running, so that staff and students can still get those critical emails sent. (I also heard from my sister that some of her professors were having phone problems as well.)I think that while technology is extremely useful, people rely on it too much and stress levels sky rocket when it doesn't work; you'd think man has been living with computers/internet for hundreds of years, not just a few decades.

  2. I agree that we depend too much on technology. It was frightening to think that there could even be a remote chance of losing valuable data--such as our grades. Fortunately there were and are the intelligent techs who know what they are doing!
I think that backup systems are certainly a good idea, especially when so many classes are elive now.
Most of my classes hummed a long with just a few minor glitches due to the outage. However, in one class our professor had to make phone calls to communicate with all of us since we were meeting outside of the classroom last week. Imagine that! Having to resort to a phone call--lol
